Learn all you can about watercolor painting and discover your style with instructor Catherine Hillis. If you’re a beginner, you’ll practice the basic building blocks and learn how to create your own painting; if you’re an intermediate, you’ll advance your skills. The instructor believes that all painters need a strong foundation in the basic building blocks of watercolor painting, design and composition to master the medium. Students will paint from still lifes and photographs; classes include demonstrations by the instructor, one-on-one coaching and helpful critiques.

Discover the pleasures of watercolor. In this 4-week beginner class, students will learn to control the medium of transparent watercolor. Using the still life as a teaching tool, this course is structured to include basic techniques, color theory, value and textures. Learn to mix clear, luminous colors with confidence. Some drawing experience helpful. Bring your lunch and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this class.

Do you paint only on cold pressed paper? Don't limit yourself when there are so many wonderful surfaces available to the watercolor artist! Claybord and Aquabord are two surfaces that are resistant to warping, keep colors vibrant, and is economical in that it allows your finished work to be displayed without a mat, glass or frame. Color mixing recipes, brush handling techniques as well as practical solutions to common watercolor problems will also be covered. Please bring your favorite watercolor supplies (brushes, paints, sketchbook, etc) as well as a few sheets of watercolor paper of your choice to work out techniques and color mixes. Open to adults and teens. Advanced Beginner and Up.

"Less is more" as we create beautiful, little paintings with limited supplies and simple compositions. No prior drawing skills required. Perfect for the complete beginner and those who would like a better grasp of the fundamentals. In-class demonstrations, step-by-step instruction, and guided painting exercises help you gain confidence and achieve beautiful results. A supply fee of $20 provides an assortment of several different paper surfaces to explore over this 6 week course which are not available locally. Open to teens and adults.

Beginning to Intermediate
Learn how to set up and design your painting. Simplify and connect the large shapes. Capture the moment and learn how to work outdoors quickly, gathering only the most essential information to paint a summer landscape that glows.
This two-day workshop is suitable for older teens to adults, beginners to intermediates. Bring all painting supplies, as well as plein air supplies. Bring a camera, sketch book and snacks, including lunch and drinks. All mediums are acceptable, but the focus is on painting in watercolors, acrylics or gouache. Location: Middleburg farm - directions will be given to registrants. Sunday back to ArtSquare for lunch and critique.

Bring your photographs or a subject of your choice and let's paint. Refresh your skills in painting, review what you know and move a step ahead. This weekend is an intensive
"recharger" for the watercolor painter and will include multiple critiques to help refine your paintings and prepare you for advancing your technique, composition and design skills. This is also a grand opportunity to bring in paintings that are not complete or need new direction. Catherine Hillis will teach you how to re-visit your work and complete it.

One of the newest mediums to enter the fine art field, Gouache is being accepted in most of the national shows and winning many awards. Explore this creative medium with award-winning artist and juror, Margaret Huddy. Very little cost need be incurred to get a taste for the medium. Gouache is a water based medium but unlike acrylics does not harm one’s brushes. Watercolor papers as well as gesso-covered mat boards make excellent surfaces for gouache.
About the Artist:
Margaret Huddy, AWS, NWS, is a nationally known, prize-winning watercolor painter, teacher, juror
and writer. Margaret recently retired from the faculties of The Art League School in
Alexandria, VA and the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC. She
has taught workshops around the USA and has led students abroad on painting workshops to Ireland, Tunisia, France, Italy and Quebec. Her work is in many public and private collections worldwide including but not limited to: the Supreme Court of the US, the National Park Service, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the US Department of State, US Embassies in Beijing, Botswana and Paraguay, Bank of America and the Marriott Corporation.
A frequent contributor to national art magazines, she has authored articles that
have appeared in The Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Magic and The Artist’s Sketchbook. She wrote and illustrated a book of State Flowers for the Credit Union National Association. Margaret is a signature member of both the American and National watercolor societies and the Watercolor USA Honor Society. She has been honored as Artist in Residence at Glacier National Park, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the city of Dinan, France. The US Department of State sent her to Paraguay as An American Artist Abroad where she taught workshops around the country. For the past 29 years, she has welcomed the public into her studio in the Torpedo Factory. Her work can be seen on her website at www.huddy.com

Known for her wonderful color, artist Margaret Huddy will share her secrets with you. A simple color chart focusing on warm and cool qualities of every color begins the day, followed by charts of mixtures of secondary colors, complements and grays. Bring a bag lunch so as not to waste time going out. On the second day, we will paint on location, applying the color ideas, or we will work inside with students bringing photos for inspiration. It is not necessary to buy my colors; the idea is to discover how to mix the best colors with what you have.

This workshop teaches the painting process from design to application of tehniques. Good paintings result from the right mixture of water and paint on watercolor paper. We will explore how to mix clean, bright color. Class format consists of a painting demonstration by the instructor in the morning and afternoon, then the class paints the same painting with individual help form Julie. A pdf of the class lesson will be available upon registration.
