Bring your photographs or a subject of your choice and let's paint.  Refresh your skills in painting, review what you know and move a step ahead.  This weekend is an intensive
"recharger" for the watercolor painter and will include multiple critiques to help refine your paintings and prepare you for advancing your technique, composition and design skills.  This is also a grand opportunity to bring in paintings that are not complete or need new direction.  Catherine Hillis will teach you how to re-visit your work and complete it.

Learn all you can about watercolor painting and discover your style with instructor Catherine Hillis.  If you’re a beginner, you’ll practice the basic building blocks and learn how to create your own painting; if you’re an intermediate, you’ll advance your skills.  The instructor believes that all painters need a strong foundation in the basic building blocks of watercolor painting, design and composition to master the medium.  Students will paint from still lifes and photographs; classes include demonstrations by the instructor, one-on-one coaching and helpful critiques.

Discover how to create lush flower borders and beautiful bouquets, and what to do with backgrounds. We will work from a real flower displays, and will also look at how to work from reference photos. This class has an emphasis on loose, splashy watercolor techniques. Achieve sparkling, clear colors and learn to paint wet-in-wet. It’s a step-by-step introduction to the fundamentals of painting in transparent watercolor that will help give you the skills and self-confidence that you need to successfully enjoy continuing in this beautiful medium. Learn how to set up an efficient work space, choose quality supplies, improve your drawing skills, design a good composition, create depth, mix colors and control the paint, and of course, make corrections! If you’ve already received instruction in the basics of painting in watercolor and are looking for a way to continue to apply and build upon what you’ve learned, we invite you to join us! Each class begins with a demonstration and lesson addressing common painting problems and teaching new techniques.  You’ll have about two hours to work on what you would like to paint, with helpful critique and support. Bring along your supplies and whatever it is you’d like to work on and we’ll help you achieve the results you’re striving for.  Open to teens and adults.

Explore the flexibility of a medium that is inexpensive, versatile, fast drying and easy to clean up.  All levels are welcome and students will be encouraged to take their own creative path after an introduction to “trail basics” such color, texture, line, and the addition of mixed media.  This class may be repeated for further intermediate to advanced studies.

Following demonstrations, students will work on contrasting values, trees, forests, rocks, foreground, aerial perspective and the mixing of various greens.    This special workshop will cover the Eight Principles of Design and how to use them to produce good paintings.  Students will also work on techniques for strong value sketches.  Cloud formations will also be covered as well as landscapes with simple figures.  Mr. Ranson will give two or three demonstrations each day.   

About the Artist: Ron Ranson is an English watercolor artist and the prolific author of 25 books on painting. He has given workshops and private instruction to students on every continent for the past 35 years.   His style is impressionistic and traditionalist, and his work is renowned for its purity of design and clear transparent colors.   Painting with his signature version of the oriental hake brush, he teaches freedom of expression and simplicity.

One of the newest mediums to enter the fine art field, Gouache is being accepted in most of the national shows and winning many awards.  Explore this creative medium with award-winning artist and juror, Margaret Huddy, AWS, NWS. Very little cost need be incurred to get a taste for the medium.   Gouache is a water based medium but unlike acrylics does not harm one’s brushes.  Watercolor papers as well as gesso-covered mat boards make excellent surfaces for gouache.

About the Artist:
