Keys to Successful Landscape Painting
with Mary Champion

Suggested Oil Painting Materials:

Oil Paints, suggested brands Winsor Newton, Gamblin, Rembrandt, Grumbacher PreTest, but any will do.
Cadmium Yellow Light  a cool yellow with no red in it
Grumbacher Zinc Yellow, or any Cad Yellow Pale or Cad Yellow Lemon can substitute.
Cadmium Yellow Deep or Medium (Winsor Newton’s Cad Yellow is a nice warm yellow)
Cad Red Light (warm red with no blue)
Alizarin Permanent (cool red with no yellow) or Alizarin Crimson
(Grumbacher Red, or Quinacridnone Red or Quinacridnone Rose are useful reds)
Ultramarine Blue  (cool blue, tends toward purple)
Cobalt Blue (warmer, has more yellow in it)
Earth and Secondary Colors:
Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna
Raw Umber
Viridian (Rembrandt is a good choice for Viridian)
Flake, Cremnitz or Titanium White  (titanium is the slower drying of these whites but easiest to find)
Other pigments I use (you can add later or bring if you have them):
Grumbacher Thalo Yellow Green
Dioxizane Purple or Cobalt Violet
Cad Orange
Burnt Sienna
Manganese Blue

Odorless Mineral Spirits, like Turpenoid in blue can, Gamsol (best)
No real turpentine – fumes!
If you like a particular medium you may bring it. I use Sun Thickened Linseed Oil or Stand Oil only occasionally, to soften stiff paints,

Palette knife – not a painting knife, one to mix paints with. Flexible metal with a nice “spring”to it

A  palette, either laminated masonite/hardboard,  glass or wood, in any shape as long as it is at least  11X14 or larger. Any palette that you are comfortable using, but don’t try to work out of the plastic box with sides: these are useful for storing palettes until the next day but awkward to work from.

Brushes
:  bring what you like to use, or buy several flats and filberts in small and medium sizes and a small round if you like. It will be useful to have at least four or five good brushes to work with. Robert Simmons Signet Bristle, Daniel Smith bristles, Grumbacher Gainsborough bristles, and Silver Brush Superior Bristle are some of the brands that I have found to be decent. If you are starting from scratch, a suggested set of brushes is:
The Simmons Signet Flats #3, #4, #6 and #8, and a filbert #4.   A fun foliage and field brush is a #2  Silver Brush Grand Prix Superior Bristle Extra Long Filbert . You might like a medium filbert or two, like Winsor Newton Monarch Synthetic Hair Filbert #8.
If you have an old splayed out bristle brush or two, bring them along; these are useful to scrub a tone color over your white canvas and a number of other things that might abuse a new or expensive brush.
A watercolor “rigger” also called a “liner” or “script” brush (for branches, details and signing your name )

Supports:
For our quick exercises you can use a 9X12 pad of canvas pages, or bring four canvas panels sized 6X8 or 8X10. You can also bring similarly sized rectangles of cut canvas (make them large enough to tape down and still leave ample painting area) and tape them to a drawing board or foamboard. For your painting, bring a stretched canvas, or any painting panel in any size from 6X8 to 11X14.

Small jar or brush washer that seals, to hold mineral spirits

Paper towels, or soft t- shirt type rags, or both.

Reference Material: Bring a few or a handful of pictures of landscape paintings that you admire. Cut them from ads, magazine articles or bring the whole publication in. Bring any photographs that you have taken and think would make a good painting. I will have reference photos for you to use as well.  It would be best for this workshop if your photos are of local scenes; we just may step outside to view fields and trees and skies as we work from photos.

Misc: A small sketch pad and a pencil and eraser might be useful, and something to take notes in, of course. A box lid or piece of cardboard to hold your wet paintings and protect your car.  Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting “messed up” because we want to relax and have fun during this workshop. It might get messy!
