The Impressionist Landscape
with Jeffrey Allison
Instructor:
Jeffrey Allison
from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
Date and Time:
Saturday 12:30pm - 4:30pm
Session 3 2008: 5/3
Cost:
$25
In the groundbreaking exhibition of 1874, Monet, Renoir, Degas and a number of other artists we now know as Impressionists, exhibited works that captured beautiful sunlit countrysides, glorious gardens, and scenes from everyday life. Alongside those better-known figures were the works of Eugene Boudin. Known for his remarkable seascapes painted en plein air along the coast of France, his timely influence on young Claude Monet created the impetus for one of the most beloved movements in art.
In this lecture, Jeffrey W. Allison, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Paul Mellon Collection Educator, traces the development of the Impressionist landscape from Boudin’s light filled seascapes to Monet’s mature works such as Field of Poppies, Giverny,1885 in which sense of place, bright contrasting colors, distinctive brushwork, and subjects from daily life combine in the trademark Impressionist style.
About
the Speaker: Jeffrey W. Allison is the Paul Mellon Collection Educator at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and a professional photographer. He holds a BA in photography and film from Virginia Intermont College and an MFA in photography from VCU. He currently teaches Advanced and Intermediate Photography at the VMFA Studio School and has taught for over twenty-five years at institutions across the Commonwealth.
