Experience working with terra cotta, hand-building with slabs and coils. After learning building techniques, we will study the form of the human head. Students may repeat this course to improve skills. Students will have the option of working from a live model for an additional fee.

This introductory course in bas-relief includes an overview of its types, history and guiding principles. Participants will learn about value scales in literal light and shadow. Instructor will provide demonstrations and will also create and complete a class project along with students as a method of teaching.

Essentials of Portrait Sculpture

Work with a live model and learn the principles of modeling the human head in the round. Students will start by building the armature and then work through massing the large shapes and essential features. The primary focus will be on visualizing the shapes of the head and face to render them in three dimensions. Sculpture stand provided for length of the class.

Immerse yourself in gestural sculpture of the human figure with wax and plaster. Explore and experiment, through hands-on work, using different materials to interpret the figure from the skeleton, masters' drawings, and sketching.
Sessions are private or semi-private, working directly with Rick in his studio above Gallery 222. All supplies are included.

After a brief review of the historical use of sculpture,
students make drawings and clay models to guide them in their creation of a life-size sculpture. Themes may include animals (real and imaginary), people and abstract forms. Students create an armature, then build the form with wood, wire, poultry netting, papier-mâché
and paint. Students are guided in the fabrication process, painting strategies and final display ideas.
