The Visual
Eye
with Kathi Scholz Fertig

student work, Mary McCafferty
Instructor:
Kathi Scholz Fertig
Dates and Times:
Mondays, 6:30 - 9 pm
Next Session: TBA
Cost: $150
We grow up seeing things as "icons"; thus, for instance,
we learn to see an apple as a vertical round shape with a curved
stem on top. Making art is a combination of skill and visual esthetic.
In this painting class, we concentrate on developing the visual
eye rather than developing extensive mechanical skills. Employing
a method of painting used by mid-19th century Italian painters
called machiaioli - which translates roughly to color
patch - you learn to see like an artist. Working from direct
observation, learn to see things as they are, not
as our mind perceives them to be, and to translate that vision
into a painting. This is an excellent course for both beginner
and experienced painters. Acrylic or oil paints may be used.

Drawing and Painting
the Portrait
with Tim Chambers
Instructor:
Timothy Chambers
Dates and Times:
Thursdays, 1 - 4 pm
Next Session : TBA
Cost: $175 + $20 model fee
This will be a highly-indiviudalized class focusing on the understanding form, value, and color in painting. The principles learned can apply to any genre, not just portraiture. Working from a live clothed model, attention will be given to proper draftsmanship and anatomy through the use of masses, relationships, and color. Students will work in charcoal and oil. During Session 3 the class will go outside (weather permitting) to incorporate the landscape with the portrait.
For those students who would like to complete a portrait of their own subject, Tim offers the chance to use the entire session to focus on painting one portrait from a photograph. Tim will guide you through the photo selection, having a reference photograph printed, composing for the canvas, and the portrait painting process from start to completion. If his interests you, bring in your photos or digital files (with your laptop!) so Tim can help select the best image to use for your portrait. You will end up with a completed portrait of someone you love (or admire, cherish, respect, etc.) by the end of the class! You will learn the different aspects of anatomy, design, color, value as well. For more details, contact Tim at studio@timothychambers.com.

Painting People
with Kathi Fertig

Instructor:
Kathi
Scholz Fertig
Dates and Times:
Mondays,
7:30 - 9:30 pm
Next Session: TBA
Cost: $140 + $20 model fee
This is representational painting in the style of ‘classical illusion’, not realism. We concentrate on painting the ‘essence’ of the person by employing the ideals of Fairfield Porter, David Parks, Vermeer and Valasquez. Students will work from life and reproductions, painting each other and themselves, singly and in group settings. Working from direct observation, students learn to ‘see’ things visually, not as conventions or as our mind perceives them and to translate that vision into a painting (and have a good time while we’re at it). Oil paints, acrylics and pastels may be used. This is an excellent course for both beginner and experienced painters.
