| Conor Backman
Conor Backman is currently a sophomore at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond where he pursues a double major in the departments of Sculpture and Extended Media, and Painting and Printmaking. At the end of his freshman year he was selected as one of four top freshman students in Art Foundation. In addition to receiving a full tuition scholarship, Backman was selected as the first recipient of the Tyler Binsted Scholarship, awarded to the top incoming student in the department of Sculpture.
Backman has been showing his work throughout Loudoun County for several years. In 2005 he was selected to participate in the Horsing Around Loudoun project. He has exhibited paintings in several group shows at Gallery 222 since his first show in April of 2007. That same month Conor won Best In Show at the Congressional Art Competition for the second year in a row. His paintings “Wetlands” and “Two Chevies” were each displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
In 2008, Backman had his first solo show at the VCU Student Art Space, and he participated in several group shows. His latest projects include the creation of Monumental Gallery, aimed at providing more opportunities for Richmond’s emerging artists to exhibit work. For the last two summers Backman has been teaching art at Gallery 222/Loudoun Academy of the Arts in Leesburg. |
