Reverse painting in plaster begins with painting the bottom layer in plaster with underglazes to create a figure, scene or abstract image. This layer will become the visible top layer upon completion, resulting in an invariably interesting effect. After the painting is complete, liquid clay slip is poured on the painting to create a 1.4 inch slab. It hardens in about 20 minutes and then can be flipped onto a board, to show the image now bonded with the clay. While we wait for one to dry, we will begin another one. After the firing, glazes will embellish the finished work.

Making a "Pinch Pot" is a most primitive and sensual way to form clay and center one’s self. In this class we paddle and pinch clay in various sizes to create more than just pots and vases, but pieces that have a truly artistic quality. Many exercises will start the process...even closing our eyes and just touching the center to become one with the clay.
In later weeks, you will grow creatively as your artistic voice emerges. We will experiment with glazes as well and you will amass a collection of work. The installation we create will take the simple to the sophisticated, whether hanging, wall mounted, linear or floor placed.

Learn the techniques of sculpting in porcelain. We will mix and inlay porcelain, using both established and experimental approaches. Each student will have approximately 10 pounds of clay of various colors. We will cut, layer, roll and inlay to create different patterns in making anything from tiles to bowls to jewelry to anything else you can dream up. After it is dry, we will carefully sand, bevel or peel our work to expose the vivid sharp color divisions. The results are vivid and exciting and will have your artistic signature.
