Day 1: A very special demonstration and hands-on instruction of Chinese Brush Painting and Calligraphy in ink and watercolor. Learn the proper way to hold the brush, make strokes, paint Chinese characters, bamboo, flowers and more. Nellie's enthusiam for this art form is infectious. You don’t have to be “artistic” to enjoy this workshop. Day 2: P'o Mo painting, or "Splash Ink" painting, is an ancient Chinese technique, though the results look contemporary. In the case of using watercolors, thickened watercolors are poured onto gold or silver leafed "shikishi" board. (A shikishi board is a paper board, covered with gold or silver metallic, then covered with a sheer protective paper, with edges of the board finished in gold trim.) Layers of colors are manipulated with brushwork and by tipping are allowed to blend and bleed. The painting is left to dry in stages and then can be developed into a landscape or seascape, a figure or a floral painting. Students may wish to bring photos of sceneries, perhaps sunsets, green fields, etc. for inspiration. (A gold board and a silver board and related art supplies are included in the fee.)" All supplies and brushes are provided and you can take them home with you. There will be a short half-hour break at noon, so bring a lunch. Tea and other Asian delights will be provided for the total experience.
